    Question

I am a very excited new film maker!

I guess i got lucky starting out, I found a great working camera at e-bay and a small editing viewer that works dandy.
I got a few rolls of kodachrome back right around the time i got a projector delivered from a sale on e-bay, GAF 2388 Movie Projector.

Lamp works fine and all seems fine, but when i put film in auto threader, smoothly then attatch to takeup reel. still good, turn knob to forward, and shucks, everything is running through and seems fine but picture makes no sense. just a bunch of film running by light.

    Is this a speed thing??

I don't think it is a variable speed projector

So now what?, take it to a repair place in NYC or re-sell it to some other sucker and try to find another projector with variable speed? seems like anything decent will cost me around $150. Any help would be appreciated. I want to start popping the corn man!!!!

That Gaf Projector from what I've heard isn't really the best. I actually sold one on eBay a little while back that I had lingering around because it really wasn't all that good. but to answer your question -

if i'm not mistaken, there should be a knob that has a slow motion option. This is basically what controls your film speed. Although it's probably not a variable speed projector, it just has a frame slow mo knob that adjusts how slow/fast the frames move past the lens. Play with that knob and see if you adjust anything. If not, sell it back on eBay for what you paid for it.

By the way, how much DID you pay for it? I've seen the prices for GAF projectors fluctuate but usually I see good ones for about 20 bucks. If you paid any more than that, you might as well opt for a variable speed one. I have a Chinon 2500GL that I recently used for a poor-man's video transfer, though I wouldn't reccommend it if you're new because it's seriously an aggravating machine, and the film gets jammed frequently and mine actually broke up in a million pieces. there goes 50 years of nostalgia in a "looks pretty good" projector.

Good luck - prices on vari-speed can range between 50 to 150 dollars.

The shutter blades on the projector aren't working. These are what make pictures move. I would pop it open and it fully inspect it yourself first, could be a simple fix. Or, you may be able to buy a fan belt off the internet and fix it yourself. I think there are places to buy them on the net.

Here's a place to send it or maybe buy parts:
    http://www.sanfordcamerarepair.com/av.html

Brian Vita of Cinema Service & Supply has a large inventory of replacement belts and other parts for 8mm, Super-8 and 16mm projectors. Phone 1-800-231-8849 in the US and Canada, (978) 538-7575 when calling from abroad, Fax 1-800-FAX-CSS5 email [email protected]

Try to resolve this with the person that sold it to you. Did they give you that junk about, "works now, but who knows??" Did they say it was tested? Maybe there is some way to get your money back, though i doubt it. DO NOT sell it off to someone else without explaining the problem first.

    allright thanks guys,

I can not seem to find any slo-mo or other speed adjustment, also, the blades (they are the things that make the light flicker right) and belts all seem to be working fine.

I know to be carefull with e-bay wording, I am learning from these kinds of mistakes. The projector listing read "Seems like it is working fine but I don't have any movies to run through it"

Any other ideas out there? I guess I'll just get another projector with speed control, (variable speed) seems to be key to get picture to sync with light flicker.

Any good places to but besides e-bay???
